Letter, 1865 May 25 : Washington, D.C. to Hon. J.J. Talmadge, Mayor of Milwaukee, Milwaukee [Wis.].

Grant writes that he is unable to accept an invitation to attend the great fair to be held in Milwaukee for the purpose of raising funds to establish a "Home" for soldiers disabled in the late struggle for National existence. He commends the Mayor on the project and expresses hope that homes will be secured for every soldier who lost the ability to support himself because of his devotion to his country. He concludes by stating that the debt of gratitude due those who served in the war is something the people of the United States cannot pay.
